In spite of volumes of literature on the subject, a vast majority of Muslims young and old–are ignorant of Islamic history. Yet, the importance of the knowledge of history cannot be over emphasized. According to Allama Iqbal, history is like long-termmemorywhere the voices of nations are preserved. So a people without knowledge ofhistory are apeople without memory. And people who cannot remember, obviously,cannot benefitfrom the lessons of history.

How many times have you heard this phrase:

"This is Haram, That is Halal"!

If you are a Muslim, then you probably hear these words repeated around you every day. You will hear them in school, you will hear them on TV, you will hear your parents say them, you will hear scholars and Imams say them, and, you will find tons of books written on the subject.

You don't believe me?

Muslim scholars and the entire Muslim world will tell us that prophet Mohammed was an illiterate man who could not read or write. They tell you this information to make the miracle of the Quran sound even more miraculous disregarding that such statements create some obvious questions:

- According to historians, the prophet Mohammed encouraged his followers to learn to read and write and teach others the same so as to spread knowledge throughout the world. How is it that a man who led by example never learnt to read and write himself?.

No one has seen God. He is not normally known except through the Messengers He sends. Religions, therefore, exist because people believe the Messengers. They are the manifestation of Allah and His representatives on earth. A person enters into Islam by the confession of Faith, the Shahadah. This states:-

Islam is an old religion, older than the prophet Muhammed. Islam was founded by prophet Ibrahim. See Quran, 22:78, 3:67-68, and 16:123.It is through Ibrahim that all of Islam's religious practices were revealed. 2:127-128.

The Prophet Muhammed was a messenger of Allah and the Final Prophet who brought the Final message, Quran, to the world, 33:40.

Imam Bukhari (died in 256H/870A.D), was well known for his compilation of Hadith/Sayings attributed to the prophet (peace be upon him). Al-Bukahri is considered by the majority of Muslims to be the 2nd source for Islam after the holy Book and is used by the majority to 'explain' the revelations of the Quran by showing what the prophet and his companions used to do/say.

HADEETH : THE QUESTION OF AUTHENTICITY…?

Hadeeth are such an integral part of traditional Islam in all its variations, that when someone suggests that the Qur’an alone should serve as the source of religious law and guidance for Muslims, the idea is usually met with shock and amazement. So, those who advocate following the Qur’an alone must address the issue of hadeeth.

The Quran, the final scripture from God to humankind is considered to be the first source of Islam. Hadeeth and Sunnah which is considered to be the secondary source in Islam, must find its validation from the Quran. The Quran is from God, after all, while Hadeeth and Sunnah , even if from the Prophet himself, are from humans.
